Sweeping Recommendations The National Association of Chimney Sweeps recommends that in normal use, chimneys should be swept as follows: Chimneys with SOLID FUEL appliance ..... Chimneys with WOOD BURNING appliances... Chimneys with GAS OR OIL appliances.... The fumes given off by all fuels are potentially lethal. If you see smoke spilling out of the fireplace or appliance, see, smell or taste fumes in a room or a carbon monoxide detector alarm has been activated, you should: Open all windows and doors to the outside air in the room where the appliance is installed Vacate the room of all occupants, including pets Let the fire go out; attempting to put the fire out can be DANGEROUS DO NOT operate any electrical appliances or switches - extinguish all naked flames DO NOT re-light the fire or appliance until the problem has been investigated and rectified by a competent person Ventilation to an outside wall, floor or door may be required for multi-fuel stoves, depending upon the kW output. It may also be required for some gas fires too.
