Sweeping Recommendations

The National Association of Chimney Sweeps recommends that in normal use, chimneys should be swept as follows:

Chimneys with SOLID FUEL appliance .....
Smokeless fuels - at least once a year
Domestic bituminous coal - at least twice a year

Chimneys with WOOD BURNING appliances...
Quarterly, when in use.

Chimneys with GAS OR OIL appliances....
Once a year

Fumes

The fumes given off by all fuels are potentially lethal. If you see smoke spilling out of the fireplace or appliance, see, smell or taste fumes in a room or a carbon monoxide detector alarm has been activated, you should:

Open all windows and doors to the outside air in the room where the appliance is installed

Vacate the room of all occupants, including pets

Let the fire go out; attempting to put the fire out can be DANGEROUS

DO NOT operate any electrical appliances or switches - extinguish all naked flames

DO NOT re-light the fire or appliance until the problem has been investigated and rectified by a competent person

Ventilation to an outside wall, floor or door may be required for multi-fuel stoves, depending upon the kW output. It may also be required for some gas fires too.
